2 Billion Lost

2 BILLION in social security benefits lost because same sex couples cannot be married in the eyes of the federal government. Of the almost 1,400 rights of marriage, approximately 1,100 rights come from the federal government, including laws pertaining to immigration, social security, inheritance tax, etc. Because same sex couples are not able to marry at the federal level (with the Defense of Marriage Act still in place), we are not eligible for any of these rights, benefits, or responsibilities.
